Map of indigenous forest classes in New Zealand (podocarp, broadleaved, beech, podocarp-broadleaved, beech-broadleaved, podocarp-broadleaved-beech, kauri, coastal, subalpine scrub).
Ecosat Forests is a digital map of indigenous forest classes in New Zealand. It was derived by combining Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery with the New Zealand Land Resource Inventory (NZLRI). ETM+ satellite imagery was used to provide accurate and recent boundaries of indigenous forests, and evidential reasoning was used to assign forest classes from the NZLRI to polygons defined by the boundaries. A mixed forest class, indicated by a dash (“-“), contains more than 10% of named classes.
The general spatial pattern of forest classes within a contiguous whole is robust. However, forest lots as individuals may be inaccurate.
