A 25m grid of BASE carrying capacity for ALL leases (calculated using Model 1). This layer is buffered around the lease boundaries supplied by LINZ by roughly 5km to ensure that it can be reused for analysis where property boundaries are found to be incorrectly mapped or out-of-date.

This data layer is derived through empirical (statistical) modelling. It is based on expert knowledge at a series of locations sampling the high country environment. At each location an estimate of BASE carrying capacity in stock units per hectare is provided by experts, and this is correlated to environmental parameters (covariates) derived from a wide-variety of available data sources (e.g., soils and climate). The statistical correlation between expert BASE and covariates is then used to model BASE across the landscape. All sources of input information will be subject to uncertainty and the final model output will contain propagated errors from this uncertainty. Because BASE ranges from 0 to 4 stock units per hectare with BASE values of less than one common, the data is supplied with floating point precision (i.e., real numbers). When BASE is summarized to whole of property estimates, caution should be exercised regarding the real accuracy and precision of the figures obtained. Depending on the total stock units and variability of input data accuracy in different areas, model output may only be accurate to approximately +/- 25 stock units.
