A digital elevation model (DEM) indicating the elevation above sea level. This layer was generated by combining the New Zealand Digital Elevation Model (NZDEM; Barringer et al. 2002) tiles from the 25 m resolution North Island (Land Information New Zealand 2020c) and South Island (Land Information New Zealand 2020d) data sets, and resampling to the LENZ 100 m grid (Leathwick et al. 2002) using bilinear interpolation.

Individual pixels are allocated to one of the following 10 values:
Generated using r.geomorphon (Jasiewicz et al. 2013; Jasiewicz & Stepinski 2013) in GRASS GIS (Neteler et al. 2012). The NZEnvDS variable “elevation” was used as the DEM input.

The unit is a dimensionless index with values below 1 indicating wind shadowed areas, and values above 1 indicating wind exposed areas. Calculated from the NZEnvDS “elevation” DEM and the SAGA Morphometry module in SAGA GIS version 7.3.0.
