The annual sum of daily potential solar radiation accounting for elevation, surface orientation, influences (shading) of surrounding topography, and to a certain extent atmospheric conditions. Generated using the r.sun.daily add-on (Petras et al. 2015) in GRASS GIS (Neteler et al. 2012) for the entire year (days 1 through 365). The NZEnvDS variable “elevation” was used as the DEM input.

A measure of how much “warmth” above 16°C is available for plant growth, calculated as the annual sum of daily temperatures above 16°C. Generated by estimating daily minimum and maximum temperature values from the LENZ monthly layers for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002), and predicting growing degree days following the methods in Coops et al. (2001).
