A digital elevation model (DEM) indicating the elevation above sea level. This layer was generated by combining the New Zealand Digital Elevation Model (NZDEM; Barringer et al. 2002) tiles from the 25 m resolution North Island (Land Information New Zealand 2020c) and South Island (Land Information New Zealand 2020d) data sets, and resampling to the LENZ 100 m grid (Leathwick et al. 2002) using bilinear interpolation.

The precipitation layers weren’t originally included in LENZ but were generated as part of the project to create the LENZ vapour pressure deficit and annual water deficit layers.

A measure of how much “warmth” above 5°C is available for plant growth, calculated as the annual sum of daily temperatures above 5°C. Generated by estimating daily minimum and maximum temperature values from the LENZ monthly layers for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002), and predicting growing degree days following the methods in Coops et al. (2001).
