This data set (LCDB v3.3 Change) is a mask of non temporal changes made between LCDB v3.3 and the previous version (LCDB v3.0) and temporal change between the 2001 and 2008 timesteps. The non-temporal changes include errors in the earlier mappings and linework refinement, including reversal of over-smoothed hand-drawn linework in v3.0. Errors were identified from; a review of low producing grassland in the South Island, updates from MfE's Kyoto Land Use maps, checks of the dating of v3.0 mapped change, and feedback from users. An “EditDate” and “Authority” attribute are available in this layer indicating the date and source of the change for both non-temporal and temporal changes mapped. The Authority attribute indicates who (or who's dataset) identified the change. Note, where minor line-work improvements were applied using automated processes, the EditDate and Authorify have not been changed (but the “NonTemporal” attribute is still set true). This layer was produced with a tolerance of 50cm as a zero tolerance generates slivers too small for the portal software to project correctly. Funding is from the Ministry for Science and Innovation under contract CO9X1101, which was contributed to by the Ministry for the Environment. The Department of Conservation and individual regional councils and territorial authorities have made significant in kind contributions by checking the draft mapping for their areas of interest.

This layer represents the net supply of water remaining after evapo-transpiration losses (mm/yr) as an indicator of water- flow regulation. Although this is a simplified view and does not consider low flows or flood flows, it permits national assessment with the use of a nationally applicable water-balance model (similar to the tier 1 approach in Kareiva et al. (2011)). WATYIELD (Fahey et al., 2010) models daily water transfers of rainfall, interception, evapotranspiration, and drainage associated with a soil profile. Input data to the model are daily rainfall and daily potential evapotranspiration (PET). Parameters required for the model included the fraction of intercepted rainfall, vegetation factors for transpiration, and total and readily available water holding capacity of the soil.

The current New Zealand greenhouse gas inventory derives implied emission factors that vary between animal types (Ministry for the Environment, 2010). The spatial distribution of animal numbers (dairy, sheep, beef, and deer) was modelled using a land-use map derived from AgriBase (AgriQuality New Zealand, 2003) and the land cover database (LCDB4.1, Manaaki Whenua, 2015). The number of animals were scaled using statistics of livestock numbers at the regional level (Agricultural Production Census (APS), Statistics New Zealand, 2017) and spatially distributed the animals using the potential carrying capacity from fundamental soil layers (Landcare Research, 2011a). N.B. Deer numbers were missing from the APS data for 2015-16 for the Taranaki region which results in reduced GHG values for the region. New Zealand-specific emissions factors were then applied using the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology for the agriculture sector for methane and nitrous oxide emissions (Ministry for the Environment, 2010).

This dataset was first added to LRIS Portal on 23 Jun 2010.

The PRISM instrument is carried on the Japanese ALOS satellite and has three sensors that provide forward, nadir, and aft-looking views of the terrain. The forward and aft views can be combined to give stereo coverage with approximately a one-to-one base-to-height ratio, which is almost ideal for generating terrain information. The nominal spatial resolution of the ALOS-PRISM imagery is 2.5m in the forward, nadir and aft directions.

Stereo imagery has been acquired of a region in Wanganui/Manawatu area of the North Island of New Zealand. This area is currently being studied for automated soil mapping, using a variety of technologies.

This DEM represents a draft version to demonstrate progress on DEM generation from PRISM. Further developments in processing, calibration and validation are required before production of acceptable DEMs is possible.

This data layer was derived from terrain analysis of a 25 m resolution national digital terrain model to create a setof landform elements. The landform elements are derived from a fuzzy classification based on local geometry (curvature and slope) and landscape context, and provide a primary foundation for mapping soil distribution in steepland land systems, which significantly improves knowledge of soil distribution on hillslopes in complex landscapes, and over a wide range of land systems.

LENZ - Winter solar radiation

Winter solar radiation data layer used in the creation of Land Environments of New Zealand (LENZ) classification. The classification layers have been made publicly available by the Ministry for the Environment (see data.mfe.govt.nz/layers/?q=LENZ for to access these layers).

Winter solar radiation reaches a minimum in June, the month when the sun is lowest in the sky and day lengths are at their shortest, hence the layer is the monthly average solar radiation layer calculated for the month of June. Estimates of winter solar radiation across New Zealand were derived from a surface fitted to monthly solar radiation estimates for 98 sites as described for mean annual solar radiation.

Data describing monthly humidity was used as a surrogate measure of cloudiness to improve the fit of the surface to the underlying data. This also increases the local accuracy of the surface predictions, as the number of meteorological stations used to fit the humidity surface is more than three times greater than the number of sites used to fit the solar radiation surface. For more details on the creation of these layers see the mean annual solar radiation layer.

The units for this layer are in MJ/m2/day, higher values signify areas that have higher levels of solar radiation. This layer has been multiplied by a factor of 10 (i.e. converted into an integer grid) to save space and make the grids more responsive. A value of 53 is actually 5.3 MJ/m2/day.

Additional details such as the climate station locations used in the creation of the layer and error maps are defined in the attached LENZ Technical Guide.

This image comes from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Programme taken on 23 November at 11:16 NZDT .

This image comes from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Programme. Copernicus’ six Sentinel satellites collect comprehensive pictures of our land, ocean, emergency response, atmosphere, security and climate change to understand the health of our planet.

Sentinel-2 is a wide-swath, high-resolution, multi-spectral imaging mission. Its optical instrument samples in 13 spectral bands: four bands at 10 metres, six bands at 20 metres and three bands at 60 metres spatial resolution. The imagery you see on this site is derived from the four bands with a spatial resolution of 10m.

There is an on-line viewer for this and the post-earthquake image at imagery.landcareresearch.co.nz/.
