The Predicted Background Trace Element shapefile contains spatial information on predicted background concentrations of selected naturally occurring trace elements - arsenic, boron, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc – across New Zealand. These concentrations were developed through statistical modelling using over 2000 data points to assess the influence of land use and three explanatory data layers – parent material, soil order and land environments of New Zealand (level 1 categories) – on the concentration of the key trace elements. From this model, estimates of the rural ambient (background) concentrations (i.e., inclusive of sites where anthropogenic activities may occur although there is expected to be minimal anthropogenic additions of trace elements to the soil and no difference from true, naturally occurring concentrations) across New Zealand were made, providing a nationally consistent approach to determining background concentrations. The predicted concentrations are displayed as filled contour plots to enable visualisation of the variation in concentrations across the country. Specifically, the median, 90th, 95th, and 99th percentile of the predicted concentrations are used as the ‘cut-offs’ for concentrations within different locations. Areas identified as being at or above the 95th percentile of predicted concentrations are considered to be areas that may contain naturally elevated concentrations that may also vary significantly at smaller scales than captured in the current study, and may warrant site-specific investigations to better determine background concentrations. These data are intended to provide an assessment of background soil concentrations at locations that are being assessed for use as clean-fills, for the assessment of contaminated land or the development of site-specific ecological soil guideline values.

The Predicted Background Concentration (PBC) shapefile contains spatial information on the effective median, and 95th quantile estimates of the background concentration (mg/kg) of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc across New Zealand. These background concentrations were developed for a geological unit classification, Chemical4, originating from GNS Science's QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand GIS dataset (Heron 2014). Chemical4 is based on the QMAP ROCK_GROUP classification but further subdivides some on an age basis ie older sedimentary rocks from their Miocene and younger rock and sediment equivalents (Maui and Pakihi supergroups, Mortimer et al. 2014). The number of samples in each Chemical4 subgroup for which predictions are made is also provided. Predictions for Chemical4 subgroups with few underlying samples (N<30) are considered less reliable and for N<10 unreliable. These data are intended to provide an initial assessment of background soil concentrations at locations that are being assessed for use as clean-fills or managed fill or for the assessment of contaminated land.

Source: These background soil concentration predictions were developed from geostatistical analysis of trace element data from regional councils, national soils database and GNS Science identifying associations with geological parameters adapted from the GNS Science QMAP geological map dataset. The premise being that underlying geology is generally regarded as a major contributor to the geochemical signals in soils and surficial material.

Full details of the development of these data is provided in 'Envirolink Report (C09X1402) 2015.pdf'. See 'PBC_FieldsDescription.xlsx' for a description of the fields in the attribute table.

The New Zealand Land Resource Inventory (NZLRI) is a national database of physical land resource information. It comprises two sets of data compiled using stereo aerial photography, published and unpublished reference material, and extensive field work:

An inventory of five physical factors (rock type, soil, slope, present type and severity of erosion, and vegetation). A 'homogeneous unit area' approach is used to record the five physical factors simultaneously to a level of detail appropriate for presentation at a scale of 1:50,000.

A Land Use Capability (LUC) rating of the ability of each polygon to sustain agricultural production, based on an assessment of the inventory factors above, climate, the effects of past land use, and the potential for erosion. The NZLRI covers the country in 11 regions, each with a separate LUC classification.

The first edition NZLRI provides national coverage from mapping between 1973 and 1979 at a scale of 1:63,360. A limited revision regional upgrade of the north Waikato area was completed at a scale of 1:63,360 in 1983. Second edition NZLRI regional upgrades at a scale of 1:50,000 have been completed for Northland, Wellington, Marlborough and Gisborne-East Cape. Third edition NZLRI layers contained a restructured polygon attribute table to allow the core NZLRI to complement the newly created fundamental soil layers with minimal duplication.

Update of Edition 3 NZLRI. This update involves ++no new mapping++, but does include a ++new National Land Use Capability legend++ correlated for all regions across New Zealand. Attributes include original LUC units codes and unit descriptions so that users more familiar with original regional codes and North Island correlations can track the pedigree of units from old to new codes and descriptions.
