New Zealand Environmental Data Stack (NZEnvDS) comprises a set of 72 spatial layers for environmental modelling and site characterisation. NZEnvDS includes the layers that informed the Land Environments of New Zealand (LENZ), additional layers generated for LENZ that were never publicly released, and additional layers generated since, all covering mainland New Zealand and surrounding inshore islands. The original/top copy of the dataset is available at (doi.org/10.7931/m6rm-vz40), but the layers are reproduced here for ease of access. See (newzealandecology.org/nzje/3440/) for a publication describing NZEnvDS. Annual sum of monthly potential evaporation as estimated from monthly estimates of temperature, solar radiation and humidity for the years 1950–1980 using the model of Priestley & Taylor (1972). These water balance layers were generated at close to the same time as the other LENZ layers, but weren’t included in the package.

See (newzealandecology.org/nzje/3440/) for a publication describing NZEnvDS. Indicates the degree to which winter temperatures deviate from the winter temperature expected given the mean annual temperature. This provides a measure of continentality, with high values in oceanic settings and low values in continental settings (see the following for examples of their use: Leathwick 2001; Leathwick et al. 2005; Leathwick et al. 2006). This layer has the advantage that its correlation with some other commonly used temperature variables (e.g. mean annual temperature) is low (Appendix S2) so can be used together with other temperature variables in a model without confounding their relative effects (Leathwick 1995). Calculated as (from Leathwick 2001): where J is the mean minimum July temperature, T is the mean annual temperature etc, using the LENZ temperature layers for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002).

Generated as part of LENZ for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002). This layer was originally called “Mean minimum temperature of the coldest month” in LENZ, but a name close to this is used for a similar BIOCLIM variable (bio6), above, so it is renamed here.

Soil temperature surfaces for the South Island of New Zealand are based on analysis of a combination of monthly mean soil temperature data from the NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) 3 years data from 175 mini-data-loggers (1997-2000) laid out in a stratified sampling scheme at 7 climatically representative locations in the South Island. At each location a cluster of about 25 data loggers sampled a range of elevations between 100 and 1800 m. At each elevation grouping the 4 primary aspects (N, S, E, W) and a flat site were sampled at a depth of 30cm. Multiple regression used site characteritics of latitude, Distance from coast, elevation, aspect, slope and forest/non-forest cover to predict topographic effects on soil temperatures.
