The sum of daily potential solar radiation accounting for atmospheric conditions, elevation, surface orientation, and influences (shading) of surrounding topography. Generated using the r.sun.daily add-on (Petras et al. 2015) in GRASS GIS (Neteler et al. 2012) for the period between the southern winter solstice and September equinox (days 172 through 266). The NZEnvDS variable “elevation” was used as the DEM input.

Annual sum of any monthly rainfall deficits in comparison to monthly potential evaporation as estimated from monthly estimates of temperature, solar radiation, humidity and wind for the years 1950–1980 using the FAO-Penman method appropriate for grasslands (Doorenbos & Pruitt 1977). These water balance layers were generated at close to the same time as the other LENZ layers, but weren’t included in the package.

Annual precipitation variability for the years 1950–1980 based on the ratio of the standard deviation of the monthly total precipitation to the mean monthly precipitation. Calculated using the source monthly LENZ precipitation layers (Leathwick et al. 2002) and the biovars function in the dismo R package (Hijmans et al. 2017).

The precipitation layers weren’t originally included in LENZ but were generated as part of the project to create the LENZ vapour pressure deficit and annual water deficit layers.

Indicates the degree to which winter temperatures deviate from the winter temperature expected given the mean annual temperature. This provides a measure of continentality, with high values in oceanic settings and low values in continental settings (see the following for examples of their use: Leathwick 2001; Leathwick et al. 2005; Leathwick et al. 2006). This layer has the advantage that its correlation with some other commonly used temperature variables (e.g. mean annual temperature) is low (Appendix S2) so can be used together with other temperature variables in a model without confounding their relative effects (Leathwick 1995). Calculated as (from Leathwick 2001): where J is the mean minimum July temperature, T is the mean annual temperature etc, using the LENZ temperature layers for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002).
