New Zealand Environmental Data Stack (NZEnvDS) comprises a set of 72 spatial layers for environmental modelling and site characterisation. NZEnvDS includes the layers that informed the Land Environments of New Zealand (LENZ), additional layers generated for LENZ that were never publicly released, and additional layers generated since, all covering mainland New Zealand and surrounding inshore islands. The original/top copy of the dataset is available at (doi.org/10.7931/m6rm-vz40), but the layers are reproduced here for ease of access. See (newzealandecology.org/nzje/3440/) for a publication describing NZEnvDS. Generated as part of LENZ for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002).
Please cite the original paper as attribution when using these layers.

A measure of how much “warmth” above 5°C is available for plant growth, calculated as the annual sum of daily temperatures above 5°C. Generated by estimating daily minimum and maximum temperature values from the LENZ monthly layers for the years 1950–1980 (Leathwick et al. 2002), and predicting growing degree days following the methods in Coops et al. (2001).

Annual sum of monthly potential evaporation as estimated from monthly estimates of temperature, solar radiation, humidity and wind for the years 1950–1980 using the FAO-Penman method appropriate for grasslands (Doorenbos & Pruitt 1977). These water balance layers were generated at close to the same time as the other LENZ layers, but weren’t included in the package.

This layer was interpolated from climate stations; for a similar version derived from a DEM, accounting for topography and atmosphere, see solRad_winterPotential (but note it covers a different time period).

The annual sum of daily potential solar radiation accounting for elevation, surface orientation, influences (shading) of surrounding topography, and to a certain extent atmospheric conditions. Generated using the r.sun.daily add-on (Petras et al. 2015) in GRASS GIS (Neteler et al. 2012) for the entire year (days 1 through 365). The NZEnvDS variable “elevation” was used as the DEM input.
